I am because we are

People-R is shorthand for ‘people are people through people’, which is longhand for  the African worldview known as ‘Ubuntu’. In Zulu you would say ‘umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu’. I am because we are. It means (to me) that our humanity depends on the quality of relationships in our community and society. That our opportunities in life are defined by connections to other people, and that our conflicts and problems can be solved through cooperation and mutual respect.  We don’t want people to lose their ubuntu through violent or dehumanising conflict (then, people-aren’t…), but if they have we can find it again through conflict transformation, reconciliation, and restoring valued relationships and harmony in the community. This is the work I aspire to do.
